Blog 6/6 Ambience

Blog 6 Ambience

"The relaxing atmosphere is a haven for me on Monday afternoons Bridget (n.d). To me ambience refers to the atmosphere and how it influences my experience of an activity.

I notice that there are not many people running around the lake today, usually I pass people every 2 minutes as I run but I am half way around the lake today and I have passed maybe three people I decide that this is because everyone is getting ready for the big game tonight, with this comes a peaceful atmosphere and I don’t feel the pressure to go faster or slower which is definitely an atmosphere I appreciate, the temperature is perfect and it’s lovely and sunny.”

That small reflection from my run is expressing the ambience I experienced as I ran today. Every day is different and it doesn’t always matter if there are people or not, this was just the feel I had with the atmosphere on this particular run, sometimes there can be feelings of tension, the weather often evokes different feelings in the air, a sunny day always feels enjoyable and a rainy day can sometimes express an atmosphere of struggle.
I believe ambience is what is in the air around us and present wherever we are, different situations, personalities, activities, occasions create different atmospheres which is what I would consider the ambience.

Ambience can provide you with both positive and negative experiences, although for me I would usually notice a positive ambience and enjoy the experience, running often creates positive atmospheres for me, I feel like I am in my zone and the fresh air, whether it is warm or cold is always welcomed.  Perfect ambience whilst on my run would be a fresh sunny late afternoon run around the lake or by the river so I can take in the beautiful scenery, with a light breeze to stop me from overheating.

Blog 5/6 Practical considerations

Blog 5: Practical considerations
“I get my trainers out of the cupboard ready for my run this afternoon. The first step is finding the appropriate socks as you do not want to pull your socks up mid run. I need to ensure I have shoes suited to my feet, which for me requires shoes with a raised heal as my calf muscles (gastrocnemius) get very tight when I am running so the raised heal allows me to run for longer and be more comfortable. I remember to tie my laces not too tightly as this has an impact on my shin’s (tibia's) and the surrounding muscles/tendons. Once I have considered all of these elements I know I have done all I can to make this run as comfortable as possible.”
For me practical considerations are the specific elements needed to perform the chosen activity optimally. These are things I need to consider in order to do my activity.
Having the correct shoes and socks and wearing them appropriately are practical elements I need to consider to prevent injuries and remain as comfortable as I can whilst performing the activity of running. Tomasetti (2003) states that “the proper running shoe is beneficial in helping to correct biomechanical errors that otherwise may lead to injuries and to alleviate pain associated with running injuries” (p. 19).
There are certain other elements I need to consider when running or preparing for a run; how do I ensure I have the correct gear? Should I see a professional to get shoes fitted for me? Can I afford to pay for the equipment? Is there certain terrain that will influence the type of shoes I need?

Blog 4/6 Affordance & Memories of my inspirational Nana

Blog 4 Affordance and Memories

Running through the heat of the day took me back to the time in my life when I was looking after my Nana as she was dying of cancer. I began running down the beach each day, sometimes twice a day, this for me was a way of coping, it gave me time to clear my mind, it kept me sane and meant that when I came back to look after nana I had a new sense of energy and a clear mind, sometimes when I would run I would just cry and let go of my emotions that I didn’t want nana to see, she was such a strong person that it didn’t feel right showing her that I too was in pain watching her suffer.

I found running was appropriate as she was a great runner herself and even qualified for the commonwealth games. Running to me means freedom, strength, and empowerment.

These days as I run I remember my Nana, her struggles, her enjoyment in running, our special memories and I find inspiration, I feel spiritually connected to my Nana, I feel her close to me when I get to the stage where I want to give up I feel she carries me, keeps me going and helps me as I once had the opportunity to help her.

It is important to understand memories as these can be important to an individual and can often give meaning and purpose for activities. As a therapist I think it is essential to understand why people do the activities they do and what the activities mean to them. Memories are a part of what makes some activities important and meaningful.

Don’t forget about the pastwithout memories there is no yesterday” (Acosta, 2008). This comes from a poem which is showing the importance of memories even though some memories are painful.

Blog 3/6 Affordances

Blog 3: Affordances

I guess my understanding of affordance is that the environment that surrounds us affords different actions and behaviours, so the environment determines what/how I do my run and this could be limiting or enhancing. Dunton, Berrigan, Ballard-Barbash, Graubard & Atienza (2009) researched the effects of the physical environment and running and found that the duration of exercise was greater when exercising outdoors than exercising indoors. I can relate to this as I can definitely run better outside as the footpath is easier to run on and the fresh air feels better than stagnant gym air.

Affordance & Spirituality:

There are many interpretations of spirituality and spirituality can mean different things to different people. For me spirituality comes from within, it lives in me, you and people who have passed, I find spirituality in the environment and any living organism. Therefore connectedness brings about spirituality for me, feeling connected to a person or the environment and while running I feel both connected to the environment and to people as you can see in my journal entry below:

I am nearing the end of my run and I feel like giving up, my legs are tight and my lungs breathless. I try to think of ways to inspire myself to keep me going, at the moment I have been writing names of people that inspire me on my arm before I leave for my run. Today I have my Nana’s name on my arm and so I begin to think of her, I can hear her voice “Don’t give up Sarah; I know you can do this” so I push myself for a further 8 minutes.”

When I run I feel spiritually connected to my Nana I feel like her spirit keeps me going when I feel like giving up. I can feel her presence in my atmosphere and the environment I am in when running allows me to experience this connection.

Blog 2/6: Ergonomics

Caulton & Dickson (2007) explain why having understanding of ergonomics is important as they discuss the importance of making adjustments to an activity to ensure it works for the intended purpose.
Running on a treadmill is not ideal for me, I always feel as if I am about to fall off the machine, but today it is out of my control. The weather outside is abysmal; pouring with rain (environment) so therefore my (person) run (occupation) needed to be adapted. This is an example of how the person, occupation and environment fit together to enable the end product, which for me was the ability to perform my activity even though the environment wasn’t permitting me to run how I usually would run.
So I didn’t fall off the treadmill today, although I am sure one day I will. How did I prevent myself falling off? Well I didn’t run as fast as I usually would, I turned the speed down low so I could keep at a steady pace. I shortened my running time too as I felt my legs getting tired and heavy which meant I didn’t have as much control as I normally would running on pavement which I felt increased my chances of falling face first on the treadmill.
So in summary the run wasn’t my ideal run and all goals were not met but my main goal was met and that was to run 4/7 days per week so I felt great afterwards and also felt a sense of pride knowing I conquered the treadmill (this time anyway) Sarah 1 Treadmill 0. If I had to run on the treadmill every week I don’t think my fitness would progress as much as it does being outside as I can’t run as fast or far as I do when I can run outside. Therefore I rely heavily on the right environment so that my running is successful.

Shoe4Africa

-Communities working together to promote causes such as HIV/AIDS/PEACE through running.

-Setting people free

-Inspiring and uniting people by having sporting legends support the events

-Cash prizes, sports equipment, school equipment providing opportunities

-Allowing two children to participate in an event although they are blind (inclusion)

These are a few things I picked out of this clip, These all show examples of positive ethics being encorporated through running.

Ultra Marathon Running Movie - Indulgence

"Engaging with the mountains" - This quote links in with affordances and spirituality, he is explaining how running makes him feel linked to the mountains. I find that when I am running I feel connected to the earth and this essentially feels like I am part of a much bigger thing, spiritually I feel free and I feel like anything that is bothering me can be dealt with, running clears my mind and reminds me that we are a part of something much greater. Running puts things into perspective.

BLOG 1/6 Participation in occupation 2

Blog 1: Mindfulness

      ·         Activity
·         Introduction
·         Mindfulness

Welcome back to my BLOG, this semester we have chosen an activity which we will be reflecting on throughout the semester. My chosen activity is running as I have begun a running program which I hope will train me to be able to run a half marathon (and live afterwards). If you want to join me on this journey, stay posted ;-)

Summarise your free writing exercise about previous experience of this activity:
This activity for me is something that I have always found extremely difficult and is an activity that requires a lot of hard work and determination. Running is something that holds great meaning for me as it is something that reminds me of someone who I hold very close to my heart who passed away only a year ago; this special person is my Grandmother who always told me stories of her childhood and all the running she did, my Nana was a great runner and even qualified for the commonwealth games, I find that thinking of how strong my Nana was helps give me drive when I feel like quitting or putting off a training. I find that I am good at sticking to my goals and so making achievable realistic goals to help me reach my goals is something that I use to succeed. I love taking in the scenery as I run and I always feel energised after a run.
What will help and hinder you in doing this activity mindfully?
I have noticed that after the tutorial I have been a lot more mindful while running; so the tutorial has helped me to be mindful. I believe that the activity gives me plenty of time to think so this will make it easier to be mindful of the activity. A hinder would be due to feeling so fatigued that I am purely thinking of completing the run and I block all other aspects out.
Where and when are you going to do it?
I will be mostly running around the streets near my house, and occasionally at the Hamilton Lake. I am running 3-4 times per week at this stage.

Jumbo Switch

This Youtube clip demonstrates how a Jelly Bean switch can be used and also shows some of the new features

Tutorial Eight: Assistive technology

Tutorial Eight: This tutorial is based on a class we had where we were introduced to differnt assistive devices
Definition Assistive Technology

Assistive or Adaptive Technology commonly refers to "...products, devices or equipment, whether acquired commercially, modified or customized, that are used to maintain, increase or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities."  (Gerard, 2001)

Or

Assistive technology refers to a broad range of devices, services, strategies and practices that are conceived and applied to ameliorate the problems faced by individuals who have disabilities.” (Cook & Hussey, 2000)

Cook,
Definition in my own words.

Technology that has the ability to improve or increase an individual’s functional abilities.

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial.

Jelly bean switch

Jelly bean switches come in a variety of different shapes and sizes; they have different names and are for different needs. I will list three jelly bean switches that are available.
  1. Specs Switch (36mm diameter)
  2. Jelly Bean Switch (64mm diameter)
  3. Big Switch (127mm diameter)
(Danger)
The cost of these devices vary mostly depending on the size
You can buy a Jelly Bean with cords, and four colour choices for $100.00 plus $15.00 postage on the spectronics New Zealand website http://www.spectronics.co.nz/product/jelly-bean-twist
The Jelly Bean switch opperates as a switch for someone with limited hand/upper limb function, they provide tactile and audible feedback.
Jelly bean switches increase occupational capacity by allowing people who do not have the muscular strength, control, use or co-ordination for example to turn on any switch, too click a mouse, to turn on a blender, to type, to play computer games and any other reason you would need a switch. If the client previously couldn’t turn on their radio this device will allow the client to do the things we often take for granted.

In the Youtube clip below this post you will see how A jellyBean switch works. ;-)

Wii – Wii-hab – Wiihabilitation
Personally I have found the use of Wii consoles in particular the one which includes the balance board to be of significant interest. I personally love playing video games so a video game with a purpose sounds truly amazing. I was fortunate enough to use a Wii as a therapy when I was on my longitudinal placement in a brain injury rehabilitation centre, so I know firsthand the impact this console had on these clients. I also appreciated the difficulty in which the game was for many of the clients, this however did not put them off. A memorable moment was watching two of the clients have a canoe race and hearing the laughter and enjoyment mixed with puffs and exhaustion made me realize that if for nothing else the exercise that these clients were experiences surpassed a leisurely walk around the block. I am aware that walking in fresh air is very therapeutic and a great source of energy, but couldn’t help but be encouraged by the amount of fun these clients were having and the sense of achievement they all received.

This is a great link to a great website dedicated to Wii-hab http://www.wii-hab.com/index.html

There are multitudes of YouTube clips with clients using Wii as therapy for all different reasons. See the bottom of my page for live streaming YouTube clips around Wii-hab

Tutorial Six: The internet and online communities

Provide the web addresses and a hyper link for the three online communities you have chosen

For this tutorial I will be focussing on the topics of acquired or traumatic brain injury and I will be making links to three online communities that relate to this topic.

Provide a brief description of each community

Traumatic brain injury forum is an online community which enables people with or who know someone with traumatic brain injury to post their feelings, struggles, milestones and thoughts, they can post questions and answers for others to reply to or comment on.

I feel that the purpose of this site is to give a place/forum where people can discuss TBI and help one another in their journey.

Caregiver.org is a website designed to help those people caring for family members with illnesses or disabilities such as TBI and ABI. This website has discussion groups, offers telephone support, updated information/research around these illnesses, gives a place for caregivers to talk to one another and learn so they are up to date with the care they can provide and so they have all the support they might need, links to other sites of help are also available.

I think the purpose of this is to provide a service for those looking after individuals living with TBI and ABI

This is a facebook page set up to offer support for those that have acquired or are living with or know someone close to them who have suffered the devastating effects of Brain Injury.

This site allows its members to share links, video clips, photos, personal experiences with the other members of the group. Friendships can be made and support is given through the sharing of questions and answers.

I think the intended purpose is for members to be able to talk to and share information with one another around ABI

What services are provided on each site?

- Offers a forum for people to talk about TBI
- This site is not too interactive but easy to follow
- People can contribute by adding comments and answering others questions where needed

- Offers forums, other related services/links, research, new ideas, support groups
- Very interactive site which allows you to post comments in forums
- You can also add comments in the forum or if you are a researcher your work can be displayed on the page if relevant

- Real life people talking through a social network, links to websites, YouTube videos, friendships, personal support, forum to ask questions
- Very interactive site which allows you to read others comments, write back, share clips, information, websites ect
- Becoming involved in conversations, sharing links, videos and personal experiences if you have any

Consider material presented in the online package.

People choose to contribute on the traumatic brain injury forum to ask for help or help others going through similar processes. They are seeking a place to discuss traumatic brain injury.

People choose to contribute to the caregiver’s site to help offer support to other caregivers and share tools, ideas and links that might help one another on their journeys; it is a way to communicate with people going through similar struggles/triumphs. They are seeking a place where they can find information relevant for caregivers and also support.

People choose to contribute to the facebook site as a way of showing that they are going through similar times and to offer help and support to others, it is a way to show that there is support out there. They also like to share their stories and links to sites/information that may be helpful to others viewing the site. They are seeking real people who have personal experiences with brain injury.

In all these sites the information is reciprocated.

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed

This is an example of the facebook webpage which is written by a mother of a child who has ABI, here she is expressing her feelings with all the other members, on this page a few people commented on this posting and offered their thoughts and support. This is just one example of many.

“my daughter was ran over back in march and now has ABI, I find it so difficult that people on the outside don’t understand because physically she has recovered quickly but mentally it is draining I’m so proud of how far she has come but it is so hard and don’t feel I am getting the support i need from a professional point of view”

Considering material presented during the course and comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community

Several ethical issues can arise on these pages as they are free for anyone to leave comments, the validity of some of the comments may not be acceptable as they don’t have to prove what they are saying is correct. There is no-one to hold accountable for these comments as profiles can be made up. Confidentiality can be breached through the facebook page as it gives access to these individual profiles after they have commented unless the profiles have been made private. The parents themselves can be breaching confidentiality as they talk about their loved ones to the world.
Consider material presented in the online package and comment on the benefits these communities provides over traditional geographical community.

The benefits would be in the vast areas these sites can be accessed, and the people they can access, for example rare diseases may be hard to talk about with everyday people and finding people that are going through the same issues can be hard so these sites allow people to talk throughout the world.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.

The face to face talks that traditional communities have and the bonds you make with people face to face can seem more real. You can see how people are coping with your eyes instead of imagining what they are going through. You can offer better support when you are there in person.

Tutorial Five: Video Production Sessions

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by YouTube.

YouTube allows individuals to set up their own account which enables them to post their own video clips, comment on other videos, add a list of favourite clips, search and view other user’s videos clips and many more features.

Introduce a chosen topic of interest drawn from your fieldwork experience, an OT practice area or a personal occupation.

During my first fieldwork experience I was placed on an assessment and rehabilitation ward and focused mostly with stroke patients I found the upper limb work fascinating so using 5 selected YouTube videos I will show you why I think what occupational therapists do with patients with weakened upper limbs is interesting.

These clips are displayed above and you will find comments by me under each clip.

Stroke Survivor Receives Therapy at Home.wmv

This clip shows some of the exercises occupational therapists use during therapy on patients with weakened upper limbs, there are many more and upper limb therapy can often be incorperated into occupations of the individuals interests or necessity.

Effects of Stroke (Stroke Recovery #1)

This clip simply describes the effects of a stroke, this is important so that you can understand how the body is effected and how you might be able to help repair it or improve function.

Fine Motor and Gross Motor Activity - Tree House Kids

This clip demonstrates an activity for children with weakend upper limbs and focuses on fine and gross motor movements. Also shows how you can create activities based on the interests of the client group. This looks like a really neat idea.

Fine motor skill turning dominos over

Another clip showing fine motor movements, these clips are useful for practise if you need new ideas, using YouTube to share your ideas and gather new ones is great fun.

Camp Helping Hands: For Children with Upper Extremity Hemiplegia

This clip advertises a camp created for children with upper extremity hemiplegia, another great clip and shows how YouTube can be used to create awareness and explain the purposes for a place such as camp helping hands.

SARAH METE - PARTICIPATION IN OCCUPATION 1: Tutorial four - Video production

SARAH METE - PARTICIPATION IN OCCUPATION 1: Tutorial four - Video production

This is a link to the tutorial four video we created and it can also be found near the bottom of the blog.

Tutorial Four:  Video Production Sessions

Task One: Create video

We worked in a group of three to plan and produce a 30 second film which you can view following the link above.

Task Two: Post your film to your blog

The task involved making a 30 second film using one letter of the alphabet as our topic, the letter we chose was M and we made a film around murder where we were going to show the letter in the final scene.

We planned a storyboard to help us portray our story, found this good to ensure we covered all the points, was very basic as it was such a short film however it was good to practise using this technique.

Tutorial Three: Blog Creation Tasks

Task One:

Task three involved setting up a blogger account which included a username and password.

Task Two:

I chose a blog template that interested me, and named my blog after the paper this blog is created for, I then introduced the blog by giving a description of the blog and then completed the blog by following given guidelines which included uploading a personal photo to my profile which represents me.

Task Three:

I then began posting my 1st and 2nd blog

Task Four:

The fourth task involved setting up a flicker account which you will see in the top right hand corner and also a the bottom of my blog.

Tutorial Two: Digital Imaging

List some of the ways that digital images are stored transferred and manipulated using information technology.

Hardware

  • USB – Universal serial bus
  • Power supply – responsible for supplying power to your computer
  • RAM – Random access memory- physical memory of a computer
  • Sound card – Computer expansion card that enables input and output of audio signals to/from a computer
  • Graphics card – generates and outputs the images to display
  • Compact disc- Storage device for digital data
  • Key board
  • Mouse
  • Printer
  • Microphone
  • hard drive

Software

  • Office suites – word processor, excel
  • Video games
  • Device drivers – to control printers, mouse, monitors ect.
  • Test ware – for testing hardware
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Audio software – Audacity
  • Internet explorer

Examples of digital imaging to provide information and recording

  • http://www.carletonsportsmed.com/Digital_multimedia/digital_multimedia.htm This is a link to a web page provided for people to see or buy the technology needed to do arthroscopy this is an awesome link to see how digital imaging being utilised in medicine, and to see just how advanced digital imaging has become. These images will be useful to look back on in the future to see advances in medicine.

  • Taking a photo of a clients physical condition (ie. abnormalities of structure) to provide information regarding the condition and keeping a record of it so they can compare with future progress.

  • Youtube is used by people around the world with different medical conditions as a way of sharing information with others about their experiences with the conditions they have. Not only is the video created but if you scroll down under the video people leave comments about their experiences and knowledge around the same or similar conditions so they share information with one another through the video and discussion. Here are a few links that you can follow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzftMcvplTc&feature=related, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbgUjmeC-4o

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”

Pluses
Minuses

Digital

·          Small in size
·          Cheaper than film
·          Perceived better/usefulness
·          Software to edit photos at home
·          Large storage and can delete photos (memory card)

·          Poor image quality compared to film
·          Consumers power faster than film
·          Data photos could last forever if not lost
·          Not convenient to share images unless printed

Film

·          Film displays a better image, is easier to project onto big screen
·          Considered more professional
·          Lower power cost
·          Prints should last decades if looked after
·          Easy to share images

·          Large in size which can be difficulty
·          More expensive

Given the prevalence of image capturing and distribution using IT, what ethical issues may arise with their use?

Privacy/copyright Facebook/newspaper/magazines/websites

Integrity of image Authenticity, film provides greater security over digital cameras. Digital film can be modified using software (fake passports) special software (San Disk) can be used to determine alteration to an original image

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice

Pamphlets given to clients with pictures of correct techniques or information about conditions which include photographs showing the correct techniques.

Digital images can be used as visual aids to remind clients what different objects are.

Digital images can be used with clients to aid with memory such as matching words to images.

http://www.glencare.com/activities/93 This site shows occupational therapists using photography as a leisure activity, a meaningful occupation in which they can further develop several other area’s for example sharing photos with others online working on social interaction, working on the computer can develop computing skills and discussing with the client different ideas can help with communication.
